How to Actually Buy a Mattress in Canada

Skip the Showroom Pressure, Focus on What Actually Matters

After four years selling mattresses in a real store, here’s the honest version of what actually matters when you’re buying one, not the version a commission-driven salesperson gives you.

Set a Real Budget First

Decent mattresses in Canada generally start around $800 to $1,000 CAD for a Queen and climb from there. Anything advertised dramatically below that range is usually cutting corners on materials that affect how long the mattress actually lasts, not just how it feels on day one.

Trial Period Matters More Than the Price Tag

A mattress can feel great for twenty minutes lying down in a store and still be wrong for how you actually sleep. Look for a trial period of at least 100 nights, ideally the 365-night trials that Douglas, Logan & Cove, and Loafy all offer. You genuinely cannot judge a mattress from a showroom test, your body needs weeks to tell you the truth.

Read the Warranty’s Fine Print

Most mattress warranties cover manufacturing defects, not just “not liking it anymore.” The number that actually matters is the body impression threshold, how deep a sag has to be before it’s covered. Look for a 1-inch threshold rather than the 1.5-inch standard some bigger brands still use, it’s meaningfully more consumer-friendly.

Firmness Is Personal, Ignore the Marketing Labels

“Medium-firm” means something different at every single brand. Use sleep position as your actual guide: side sleepers generally want softer mattresses for shoulder and hip pressure relief, back and stomach sleepers generally want firmer support. See our mattress-matching quiz if you want a specific starting point.

Buy Direct-to-Consumer, Not Through a Middleman Markup

Brands that ship directly to you, rather than through a traditional retail showroom, generally pass along real savings since they’re not paying for the store lease, the sales staff commission, or the markup that comes with both. That’s the whole reason bed-in-a-box brands can offer better mattresses at lower prices than a lot of traditional retail.
