How to Match Yourself to the Right Mattress

Five Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Buy

Before you compare a single brand, answer these five questions honestly. They’ll narrow your options faster than reading twenty reviews.

1. How Do You Actually Sleep?

Not how you fall asleep, how you wake up. Most people shift positions through the night, but pay attention to where you spend the most time. This is the single biggest factor in firmness preference.

2. Do You Sleep Hot?

If you regularly kick off blankets or wake up warm, lean toward a hybrid mattress with coils for better airflow, rather than a dense all-foam construction that traps more heat.

3. Are You Sharing the Bed?

Motion isolation matters a lot more if a partner’s movements wake you up. All-foam generally isolates motion best. If you also care about edge support (using the full width of the bed), a hybrid is the better compromise.

4. What’s Your Actual Budget?

Decide this before you start browsing, not after you fall in love with a $2,000 mattress. Every brand we recommend has options between roughly $800 and $1,700 CAD for a Queen, there’s real quality across that whole range, not just at the top.

5. How Long Do You Want to Commit?

A mattress is generally a 7 to 10 year purchase. If you’re not sure yet, prioritize the longest trial period you can find (365 nights, ideally) over saving a small amount upfront, since the cost of getting it wrong is a lot higher than the cost of a slightly longer trial window.
