Mattress Firmness Explained: How to Actually Choose, Not Just Guess

Firmness Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All, Here’s How to Actually Get It Right

Firmness is the single most common thing people get wrong when buying a mattress online, mostly because brands describe it inconsistently. Here’s a more reliable way to think about it.

Start With Your Sleep Position

Your sleep position determines where your body needs the most pressure relief and support.

  • Side sleepers generally want a softer to medium feel, to cushion the shoulder and hip.
  • Back sleepers generally want medium to medium-firm, enough support to keep the spine neutral without pressure points.
  • Stomach sleepers generally want firmer support, to prevent the hips from sinking and putting strain on the lower back.
  • Combination sleepers (most people, honestly) generally do best on a medium hybrid that handles multiple positions reasonably well.

Body Weight Changes the Equation

A mattress that feels medium-firm to a 130-pound person can feel noticeably softer to a 220-pound person, because more weight compresses foam and coils further. If you’re on the heavier end, lean toward the firmer side of whatever your sleep position suggests, or toward a hybrid with a more supportive coil core.

Shared Beds Need a Compromise, Not a Guess

If you and a partner have different firmness preferences, a medium hybrid is usually the safest middle ground, and a long trial period matters even more here since you’re both testing it together.

Why Trial Periods Exist

You cannot reliably judge firmness from a showroom test or a spec sheet. Your body needs real nights of sleep, ideally several weeks, to actually tell you if a mattress is right. That’s why every brand we recommend offers at least a 100-night trial, and most offer a full year.
